Today’s post is based on a comment made to me on the weekend by Kirstie Tweed of Orange Girl Photographs. Some of her clients have asked if there is enough room for a DJ in Cilantro on the Lake at Emerald Lake Lodge. Twice in the last week I have had the pleasure of providing the entertainment for weddings in Cilantro on the Lake and this may well be the ultimate intimate wedding reception location in the Rockies.
There are function rooms that are not friendly to some DJ equipment setups. Many DJ’s will require at least an 8 foot table to accommodate the equipment and music library plus room on either side for speakers and light stands.
I did need that much space at one time and most venues that regularly have DJ’s coming in for wedding entertainment will almost always provide an 8 foot table for the DJ. An 8 foot table with speakers on either side does provide a nice visual balance in an appropriately sized venue and there are professional sound systems that will require that much space. But what about those smaller rooms? There are many weddings in this area with 25 to 50 guests and that much space is just not available.
This space demands a compact entertainment system, but a small footprint does not necessarily mean that you will have to settle for minimal sound performance. A computer based system will fit quite nicely on a 24 inch table and a Bose L1 speaker can provide more than ample sound for the space.
When you are hiring the entertainer for your intimate wedding, you must match the style and space requirements of the DJ to your venue limitations and the experience you want to create for your guests.
It’s not fair to a club style DJ to cram him into a corner on a 3 foot table and it’s not fair to you to have the DJ’s gear as the centerpiece to your otherwise intimate celebration.
Here are a few photos from my March 19 wedding at Cilantro. The sound system is discreet and does not detract from the overall feel of the room.
